Abstract:	This paper aims to discuss the BNDES’s performance with small and medium enterprises (SME). For this purpose, we revisit the theoretical arguments that justify this performance, the empirical evidence about the effectiveness of this support and the mechanisms that account for this effectiveness. In addition, we present practical questions regarding the Bank’s relationship with SMEs, including a variety of supporting instruments and their (positive) effect on bank industry deconcentration. Finally, we discuss the possibilities for advancement in this area, crucial for development banks.
