Abstract: For corporations to remain competitive, it is imperative that they continually innovate. This paper presents how two initiatives to foster innovation – the implementation of a startup acceleration program and the participation in an innovation center – have the potential to generate several benefits for corporations. Such benefits include: developing an entrepreneurial mindset, stimulating intra-entrepreneurship; increased potential to generate internal benefits, such as product or process innovations; cultural change, making the company more efficient. The paper draws on the experience obtained in implementing the first edition of BNDES Garagem, a program for creating and accelerating startups that supported 74 startups in different stages and from different industries and states. The paper further describes the main lessons learned as well as cases of startups supported and the challenges faced in the process.
