Abstract: The mining activity keeps on increasing production, with the consequent environmental risks and impacts, mainly due to the large volumes of solid waste generated. The sector is not a major responsible for reenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. Compared to other mining countries, Brazil has lower emissions. Otherwise, the large material volumes mined in one of the world’s largest ore producer is responsible for the generation of also huge volume of waste, largely disposed in tailings dams. This article presents an overview of the challenges associated with the management of mining waste, including measures to eliminate the risk of accidents such as that of Mariana (Minas Gerais) and to build a more sustainable path for the development of Brazilian mineral potential.
