Abstract: | With the globalization of the economy, the share in international trade flows has become an important indicator of the success of a nation. Considering that technology-intensive products have come to occupy the most saliente position on the trade agenda, technology policies have also become an important conditioning factor of greater competitiveness, and thus, a greater share in international trade. A discussion such as this one, is useful in so far as it draws some lessons for Brazil from what has been happening in the “leading countries”, in the sense of observing what can be done to boost exports, a fundamental fator in overcoming current external restrictions and in promoting sustained growth. In order to increase the competitiveness of external sales, there is a need, in addition to a favorable exchange rate, for greater “sophistication” of the export mix, which, as international experience shows, implies an increase in the technology content of our products. |
