Abstract: This work analyses the relationship between property rights and personal income. Considering the relevance of institutions in the economy, it is tested whether property rights are also an important determinant of personal income within the context of low income communities, in view of the fact that they have badly defined, and therefore badly attributed and secure property rights. It is supposed that, if property rights are better defined, attributed and guaranteed in slums, the transaction costs will be low and, consequently, the value of the asset and the income of the owner of this asset will be greater. Through the socioeconomic research work of low income communities in Caju conducted in Rio de Janeiro in 2002, it is empirically observed whether the formalization of property rights has a positive and significant impact on the expected per capita household income in the Caju Complex.
