Abstract: In the last decades of the 20th century, the adoption of best corporate governance practices and the best performance of publicly traded companies has gained increasing importance, along with the overhaul of financial system oversight policies, corporate laws, to protect investors and regular business activities and as relations with the business cycle and as financial crises. In Brazil, the number of companies that participate in the capital market can still be considered limited, with the capital market having not yet reached its full potential as a source of resources to promote long-term firm growth, disseminate a culture of good corporate governance practices and promote the sustainable development of the country. This article aims to reflect on these issues related to the development of corporate governance and try to identify the possible ways to be followed.
