O debate recente sobre o pico da produção mundial de petróleo

Abstract

O artigo tem por objetivo apresentar o estudo atual das discussões recentes a respeito do eventual pico na produção mundial de petróleo. Após uma rápida definição do conceito de Pico de Hubbert, são examinadas diversas posições sobre o tema, cobrindo ampla gama de projeções. As projeções mais radicais, segundo as quais o pico é iminente, merecem maior destaque, por serem menos conhecidas da opinião pública. A hipótese de que a produção mundial entre em declínio nos próximos anos aumentaria, de forma dramática, a importância dos demais combustíveis líquidos. O artigo analisa, sucintamente, as perspectivas dessas fontes de energia para substituir o petróleo. Finalmente, discute-se a situação do Brasil, a qual, embora favorável, poderá deteriorar-se a médio prazo.

The article aims at presenting the current study of recent discussions with respect to an eventual peak of the worldwide petroleum production. After a brief definition of Hubbert's Peak concept, different positions on the matter are examined, covering a wide range of projections. Those projections which are more radical, and according to which the peak is imminent, deserve more emphasis, for being less known to the public opinion. The hypothesis that world production should start to decline in the next few years, would drastically increase the importance of other liquid fuels. The article also briefly analyzes the perspectives for such energy sources coming to replace the petroleum. Finally, the situation in Brazil is discussed which, although favorable, may deteriorate in the medium-term.
