Abstract: This paper reflects on results that have damaged the land rights of people and traditional communities in the Amazon in adopting both “protection-based” and “protectionism-related” policies. The former are connected to an environmental-conservationist effort and are defended by multilateral agencies; however, they have been unsuccessful in changing some local situations, such as land-title regularization in reserves and granting land rights to those living in quilombos (former-slave communities). On the other hand, “protectionist” policies have unleashed inappropriate exploration in the “natural-resource strategies”, which has weakened the land rights acquired by people in the region.
