Abstract: Since 2010 there has been a decrease in the production and employment in the manufacturing industry in Brazil. For this reason, many studies have been carried out to explain the phenomenon and thus indicate solutions. However, partial perspectives have limited the scope of its recommendations. This article aims to describe the origins, concepts, methodology and results of the Study of the Potential of Diversification of the Brazilian Chemical Industry, which was financed by BNDES with resources from the Fund for Structuring Projects (FEP) which sought to identify the most promising segments of the chemical industry in the country. The description of the experience and methodology of the study, which recognized the systemic characteristics of the industry, should help guide public and business efforts towards the development of local industries with real chances of success in global markets.
